한성기 백제 지방성으로서의 충주 장미산성 검토

An Examination of Jangmi Fortress in Chungju as a Regional Fortress of Hanseong Baekje

충주 지역은 충청과 영남 지역을 연결하는 소백산맥을 지나는 주요 육상 교통로가 있는 곳이자, 한강의 본류인 남한강을 따라 배를 타고 한성에 다다를 수 있는 한강 수로의 주요 지점이기도 하다. 또한 한반도 주요 철 산지로서, 원삼국시대부터 제철 작업이 이루어졌던 곳이었다. 이러한 이점으로 인해 삼국시대에는 백제, 고구려, 신라가 차례로 이 지역을 차지했고, 충주 장미산성 역시 그러한 역사적 맥락에서 자리하였던 것으로 이해된다. 충주 장미산성은 한강을 따라 충주 분지로 진입하는 길목인 장미산 정상부에 축조된 포곡식 석축산성으로, 현존 성벽의 전체 둘레는 2.94㎞이다. 해당 성곽은 신라가 충주 지역에 진출한 6세기 중반 이후에 축성된 것이나, 산성에서는 조족문 토기를 비롯한 한성기 백제 토기나 고구려계 철촉이 수습된 바 있어 그 이전 시기에 산성이 축조되었을 가능성이 꾸준히 제기되어 왔다. 그런데 최근 장미산성의 북쪽 성벽 발굴조사 과정에서 석축 성벽 아래로 토루와 함께 관련 유구가 발견되었다. 이에 본 논문에서는 충주 장미산성을 대상으로 한성기 백제 지방성으로서의 가능성과 그 역할을 살펴보았다.

The Chungju area is a strategic site located along major land routes that cross the Sobaek Mountain Range, connecting the Chungcheong and Yeongnam regions. It is also a significant point on the Han River waterway, allowing access by boat to Hanseong via the Namhan River, a main tributary of the Han River. Additionally, as one of the primary iron-producing areas of the Korean Peninsula, ironworking activities were carried out here from the Proto-Three Kingdoms Period. Due to these strategic advantages, Chungju region was successively occupied by Baekje, Koguryo, and Silla during the Three Kingdoms Period. Jangmi Fortress in Chungju is understood within this historical context. Jangmi Fortress is a stone-walled mountain fortress constructed on the summit of Jangmi Mountain, which is located along a route leading into the Chungju Basin via the Han River. The remaining walls of the fortress stretch for a total of 2.94 kilometers. Although it is generally believed that the fortress was constructed after Silla's expansion into the Chungju area after the mid-6th century, the discovery of artifacts such as Hanseong Baekje pottery and Goguryeo-style iron arrowheads raises the possibility that the fortress may have been built earlier. Recent excavations of the northern wall of Jangmi Fortress have uncovered an earthen wall and associated features beneath the stone wall, suggesting the possibility of an earlier construction phase. This study examines Jangmi Fortress in Chungju to evaluate its potential role as a regional fortress of Hanseong Baekje and explore its historical significance.
