Previous research on Korean - nama generally attributes a speaker’s positive attitude toward what is denoted by the clause containing the particle. The current study argues that a speaker’s subjective attitude toward a situation is not a semantic component of the particle. Instead, it proposes an account of the -nama as a focus particle by presenting three claims. First, the particle evokes a scale of quality, on which the focus value is ranked lower than other relevant alternatives in contrast with it. Secondly, the scope of -nama is limited to the immediate phrase it has its focus on. Finally, the particle carries an adversative meaning and relates two relevant propositions accordingly.
