문화유산으로서 지명경관: 유엔 지속가능발전목표에 있어 지명의 역할과 시사점 탐구

“Namescape” as Cultural Heritage: Exploring the Role and Implications of Place Names in the Context of the UN Sustainable Development Goals

본 연구는 문화유산으로서 지명 개념을 구체화하기 위한 실천 방안을 경관 개념을 중심으로 모색하는 데 초점을 둔다. 경관은 1992년부터 유네스코 세계유산위원회에서 논의 되고 있는 주요 유산 항목이다. 경관이 문화유산으로 여겨지는 주된 요인으로는 자연을 통 한 인간의 집단적인 정체성과 문화적 실천이 드러난다는 사실에 기인한다. 곧 경관은 인간 과 자연을 아우르는 복합적인 상호작용의 가치를 담아내는 유산으로 볼 수 있다. 이러한 인 식에 기반하여 본 연구는 주요 유산 항목으로 거론 중인 경관이 지명과 만나는 지점을 모색 하고 지리학에서 논의되는 ‘지명경관(namescape)’ 개념을 통해 지명의 문화유산 가치를 구체화하고자 한다. 지명은 장소 정체성과 집단적 가치를 상징적이고 가시적으로 드러낸다 는 점에서 경관의 요소로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 지명경관 개념을 통해 지명이 어떻게 문화 유산의 성격을 가지며 유엔 지속가능발전목표와 같은 글로벌 아젠다에 가지는 시사점은 무 엇인지를 논의하고자 한다.

This study conceptualizes place names as cultural heritage, emphasizing the concept of landscape. Since UNESCO recognized landscapes as a heritage category in 1992, the primary reason landscapes are considered cultural heritage is their embodiment of collective human identity and cultural practices expressed through interactions with nature. Based on this understanding, the study seeks to identify the intersection between landscapes and place names and to articulate the cultural heritage value of place names through the concept of “namescape,” as discussed in geography. Place names symbolically and visibly reveal a sense of place and collective value. This study examines how place names possess the characteristics of cultural heritage and their implications for global agendas such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
