This study traced, in the mid-Joseon period, Jaebong(霽峰)'s life and tea life through Tea Poetry (茶詩). This study examines how his tea life maintained the tradition of Joseon tea culture during a period when Joseon tea culture was stagnant. His longing for stiffness, the reason for choosing tea instead of alcohol to as a resolution of his thirst, and his mention of Taiwei and Dogok from Tang(唐) showed his deep and extensive knowledge of tea. When he was working at Hongmungwan in younger days, he, with tea, cooled off during breaks, expressed gratitude for the King's grace, prayed disappearance of winter and enjoyed it leisurely while making tea under the blue lanterns. He also showed a Taoist aspect when he said that he brewed tea in the Fairyland(仙界) because his worldly desires disappeared and his mind became at ease. He showed his deep tea life as a scholar by testing the taste of tea with tea leaves younger than the snow during the melting season. In the poem he sent to Seoha and Songgang during the period when he was abstaining from alcohol and was getting closer to tea, he confessed that he no longer drinks alcohol and spends the night with tea. His expression in another poem that when he woke up from drinking, the teapot was boiling and the cold moonlight was seeping into the window screen(窓紗), creating harmony, shows the high level of lyricism(敍情). The expression “The lonely footsteps caught in the net of the secular world are funny” in the poem of Seong Hui, a general under Admiral Yi Sun-sin, largely shows Jaebong’s sage-like appearance, while blurring the boundaries between Confucianism and Buddhism and taking a stance of Communication between Confucianism and Buddhism(儒佛會通) Tea vocabulary(茶語) that appears in Jebong's poems suggests his diverse tea life. His extensive knowledge of tea and his skill in handling tea show that Jebong played a pivotal role as a successor who could continue the tradition of tea culture that had stagnated in the mid-Joseon period.
