As a representative of “western dramas performed with a Chinese approach”, Hebei Bangzi, Medea is an adaptation of the homonymous work by the ancient Greek tragic playwright Euripides. Based on the influence of Brecht’s epic theater theory on modern drama and the context of traditional Chinese opera facing modernization in multicultural exchanges, this thesis explores how the characteristics of epic theater are applied and embodied in Hebei Bangzi, Medea through theoretical research, text analysis, cross-cultural comparative studies, and other approaches. It reveals the innovative transformation and rational depth achieved by epic theater theory in the modernization process of Chinese local opera. Furthermore, this thesis discusses the misunderstandings and narrow-mindedness towards traditional Chinese opera that exist due to Brecht’s “rebellion”, and delves into the improvement and reconstruction of Chinese opera in relation to epic theater theory.
