The Paratexts of the English Translation of Decoded: Composition, Functions and Implications

Since its international release, the film Decoded has garnered positive reviews from audiences for its unique portrayal of China’s national red culture. This film has also set an example for the foreign translation and promotion of Chinese film, where paratexts have played a critical role in the success of its overseas translation and introduction. By integrating Translation Studies and Communication Studies, this thesis analyzes the peritext, such as the English title, the English version of the theme song, opening and ending credits and the epitexts, including synopsis, posters, trailer and reviews. It elucidates the multifaceted roles of paratexts in serving audience, reflecting the translator’s values, interpreting Chinese culture, and enhancing commercial communication. This research not only enriches the study of English translation and introduction of Chinese red cultural films but also offers insights into the international dissemination of Chinese film.

电影《解密》在海外上线以来，独具中国民族性的红色文化受到观众的好评。该电影也成为了中国电影对外译介的典范，在促成电影海外译介的成功因素中，副文本起到关键作用。本论文融合翻译学和传播学，通过对电影《解密》英译版的片名、英文版主题曲、片头与片尾字幕等内副文本，以及内容概要、预告片、海报、影评等外副文本的分析，揭示了副文本在帮助观众理解电影、体现译者价值、阐释中国文化以及促进商业传播中的多重作用。期待该研究能够丰富中国红色文化类的影视英译译介研究，并为中国电影的国际传播提供一定的启示。
