A Study on Enhancing the Class Participation of Multinational Elementary Students with Immigrant Backgrounds through Small Group Activities : Focusing on Stance Taking and Role Shifting Patterns

목적: 본 연구는 이주배경학생을 대상으로 하는 한국어 수업의 소집단 활동에 나타난 대화에서 학생의 입장 취하기와 역할 변화 양상을 제시, 이를 분석하고 이주배경학생의 수업 참여도를 높이는 방안을 제안하였다. 방법: 이주배경 다국적 초등학생을 대상으로 소집단 활동을 포함한 한국어 수업을 진행, 이를 녹화, 전사하여 수업 대화를 분석하고 상호작용에 나타난 입장 취하기, 역할 변화 양상과 이어지는 수업 참여도를 관찰하였다. 결과: 학생들은 한국어 의사소통에 제한이 있음에도 유의미한 상호작용을 위해 다양한 입장을 취하면서 대화에 참여하고, 질문자, 응답자, 평가자 등의 역할을 수행하며 활동에 참여하였다. 성공적 상호작용을 보인 학생들은 이어지는 활동에 주도적으로 참여하였으나, 그렇지 못한 학생들은 참여에 미진하였다. 결론: 성공적 상호작용이 수업 참여도에 영향을 미치므로, 교사는 학생의 상호작용을 위해 치밀하게 조직된 수업 활동을 준비하고 적절한 피드백을 제공해야 한다.

Purpose: This study aimed to present and analyze patterns of stance- taking and role-shifting in small group activities during Korean language classes for students with immigrant backgrounds, proposing strategies to enhance their class participation. Methods: The research involved conducting Korean language classes with small group activities for multinational elementary school students with migrant backgrounds. The classroom interactions were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to observe linguistic and non-verbal interactions, focusing on stance-taking and role-shifting patterns, and how these related to student participation. Results: Despite limitations in Korean language proficiency, students with migrant backgrounds engaged in meaningful interactions by adopting various stances and playing roles such as questioners, respondents, and evaluators. Students who demonstrated successful interaction took on a more active role in subsequent activities, while those who struggled with interaction showed lower levels of participation. Conclusion: Since successful interaction influences participation, teachers need to design meticulously organized classroom activities and provide appropriate feedback to facilitate student interaction.
