Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop grounded theory on the grieving process and post-traumatic growth experiences of adolescents who have experienced the loss of a parent, providing a foundation for adolescent grief counseling. Methods: With regard to data collection, individual interviews were conducted with four participants, specifically three middle school boys and one high school girl, over two months, from May to June of 2024. Each participant attended one session per week (averaging 45 minutes each) for a total of sixteen sessions. The data were analyzed using Charmaz’s (2006) constructivist grounded theory methodology. Results: The grieving process and post-traumatic growth of adolescents who experienced parental loss were found to follow five stages: falling apart, struggle, breathing, breaking through, and living again. The central theme identified was ‘breaking through the pain of bereavement and living again’. Conclusions: This research underscores the necessity of timely grief counseling interventions by providing an in-depth exploration of the grieving processes and post-traumatic growth experiences of bereaved adolescents. It also highlights the importance of investigating the aspects of post-traumatic growth that can aid in their recovery.
