The Influence of Attention-deficit/Hyperactivity on Depression through School Maladjustment and Daily Stress among Middle School Students

Objective: This study aims to investigate the influence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity on depression through school maladjustment and daily stress among middle school students. Methods: This study used a nationally representative sample of middle school students from the Korean Teenagers’ Mental Health Study and analyzed total, simple mediation, and dual mediation effects by utilizing Model 6 of the PROCESS macro method. Results: First, attention-deficit/hyperactivity in middle school students showed a positive and significant total effect on depression. Second, school maladjustment and daily stress in middle school students had a simple mediation effect on the influence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity, respectively, on depression. Third, school maladjustment and daily stress in middle school students had a serial dual-mediation effect on the influence of attention-deficit/hyperactivity on depression. Conclusions: Based on the analysis results, this study suggests diverse strategies by which to address depression in middle school students by dealing with their attention-deficit/hyperactivity issues.
