Analysis of Determinants of Local Food Index Ratings

This study examines the variables impacting the computation of the local food index and proposes policy enhancements to promote the development of a sustainable food circulation system. To do this, the Heckman sample selection model was used to consider local government participation and regional food performance in two stages. The analysis demonstrated that participation in local food index policies is significantly affected by the ratio of the economically active population to the total population, the aging index, the length of roads, and the fiscal independence ratio. The grade of the local food index was statistically significant in relation to the proportion of small-scale farmers, the number of excellent local food direct sales outlets, and the number of agricultural cooperatives. In particular, the discovery that a rise in the number of small-scale farmers corresponds to a decline in the grade of the local food index suggests that the existing local food policies have not effectively met their intended aim of supporting small-scale farmers, emphasizing the necessity for policy enhancements.
