Purpose - The purpose of this study is to review major domestic and international papers on subsidiary initiatives, which represent the entrepreneurial activities of multinational corporations’ overseas subsidiaries, in order to examine key research trends and future research directions. Design/Methodology/Approach - International papers were selected from major international business-related journals, while domestic papers were selected from key domestic academic search engines using titles, keywords, and abstracts related to subsidiary initiatives. Findings - International papers are categorized into those by Julian Birkinshaw and subsequent studies. Empirical research outnumbers theoretical studies. Research on the causes of subsidiary initiatives and studies at the organizational level are more prevalent. However, there is a lack of research focusing on regions in Asia. Domestic papers on subsidiary initiatives are scarce, and foundational areas such as the definition and measurement of subsidiary initiative variables have not been adequately addressed. Additionally, research samples are predominantly focused on Korea and China. Research Implications - International papers need improvement in the frequency of research on the causes, processes, and outcomes of subsidiary initiatives, as well as in the unit of analysis and research sample distribution. Domestic papers require improvements in the overall number of studies and in basic research areas such as research methodology.
