1990년대 중국 인디음악의 ‘둥지 형성’ - ‘슈춘(樹村)’의 형성과 해체를 중심으로

The “Nest Formation” of Chinese indie music in the 1990s : Focusing on the formation and dissolution of “Shucun (樹村)

인디음악은 1970년대 후반과 1980년대 초반 개혁·개방의 물결과 함께 중국으로 전해져 왔다. 중국 인디음악의 초기 물리적 공간 매개체인 슈춘(樹村)은 중국 인디음악의 유토피아로 알려져 있다. 슈춘(樹村)에는 전국 각지에서 인디음악을 즐기는 젊은이들이 모여들었다. 그들은 자신의 음악을 하고, 밴드를 결성하고, 악기를 배우고, 가끔바에 가서 공연을 하기도 하였다. 이 밴드들 중 일부는 점차 유명해져서 음반을 발행하고, 언론에 노출되고, 심지어 해외에서 공연을 하기도 하였다. 이외에 슈춘(樹村)은중국 인디음악에 관한 다큐멘터리와 영화에도 자주 등장하였다. 본고에서는 1990년대 중국 인디음악의 매개체인 슈춘(樹村)의 형성과 해체 과정을 질적 연구를 통해 재현한다. 중국 인디음악의 초기 발전 매개체인 ‘슈춘(樹村)’을연구대상으로 삼고, 인디뮤지션, 음악 평론가, 음악 팬 등을 인터뷰 대상으로 선정했다. 또한 인터뷰 다큐멘터리, 음악 예능 프로그램과의 인터뷰, 그리고 기타 텍스트 자료를 분석하여 1990년대 중국 인디음악의 초기 단계에서 일어난 변화와 발전을 살펴본다. 본고에서는 자크 아탈리(Jacques Attali)가 제시한 발전 체계를 기반으로 1990 년대 중국 인디음악에 영향을 미친 정치적·경제적 요인을 분석한다. 또한 1990년대 중국 인디음악이 직면한 딜레마를 지적하고, 향후 연구의 토대를 마련하고자 한다.

Indie music was introduced to China during the late 1970s and early 1980s amidst the wave of reform and opening-up. Shucun (樹村), the early physical space and medium of Chinese indie music, is often referred to as the utopia of Chinese indie music. Young people from across the country who loved indie music gathered in Shucun. They created their own music, formed bands, learned instruments, and occasionally performed at bars. Some of these bands gradually gained fame, releasing albums, appearing in the media, and even performing overseas. Additionally, Shucun (樹村) frequently appeared in documentaries and films about Chinese indie music. This paper reconstructs the formation and dissolution of Shucun (樹村), the medium of Chinese indie music in the 1990s, through qualitative research. It takes Shucun (樹村), an early developmental medium of Chinese indie music, as the research subject and interviews indie musicians, music critics, and music fans. The study also analyzes interviews from documentaries, music variety shows, and other textual materials to examine the changes and developments that occurred in the early stages of Chinese indie music in the 1990s. Based on Jacques Attali's framework of development, the paper analyzes the political and economic factors that influenced Chinese indie music in the 1990s. It also highlights the dilemmas faced by Chinese indie music during this period and aims to lay a foundation for future research.
