Victor Segalen (1878–1919), a French sinologist, is distinguished in the history of cultural exchange between China and the West. His poetry collection Stèles emerges as a critical site of Chinese and Western cultural interaction, where Taoist concepts are dynamically integrated into its context and aesthetic characteristic. The study reveals that the poems in Steles directly express Taoist concepts such as “Dao and Nothingness”, “Wu Wei” (non-action), and “dialectical thinking”, and include the themes of reclusion and leisure, carefree wandering, and mystical illusions. His work of friendship and individual value aligns with Zhuangzi's philosophy. Segalen incorporates Taoist ideas into his poems, either directly or by more subtle incorporations, they not only examine the understanding of the complex Chinese ideological and cultural origins in his poetry, but also provide a new perspective on the research of Chinese and Western poetry traditions.
