1960년 일본인 기자들이 입국한 시점은 비록 대일 강경책을 고수한 이승만 정권의 퇴진으로 한일관계에 다소간 해빙 기운이 움트긴 했지만, 특히나 인적 교류의 측면에서 양국은 여전히 머나먼, 서로 낯설고 생소한 백지장 같은 상태였다. 그러한 상황에서 처음으로 한국에 온 일본인 기자들은 한일 양국에 각기 정보를 전달하는 발신자이자 앙국관계의 매개자로서 독자적인 위상을 지녔다. 나아가 일본의 한국 인식 또는 한국관(觀) 형성에도 나름의 역할을 했다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 어떤 배경을 지닌 이들이 한국에 왔는지, 이들의 취재 활동 즉 한국에서 무엇을 보고 느꼈으며 무엇을 전달했는지를 분석하는 것은 당대 한일관계를 언론 나아가 사회적 측면에서 새롭고 폭넓게 이해하는 데 도움이 될 수 있다. 이 같은 문제 의식에서 본 고는 유엔군 소속이 아닌 일본국 기자로서 1960년 4월혁명 후 처음으로 한국 정부로부터 정식 비자를 발급받아 취재 차 입국한 주한일본기자단 1진을 대상으로 그들의 주요 이력과 취재 활동을 살펴보았다.

When Japanese correspondents entered Korea in 1960, Korea and Japan, the two countries were still distant, unfamiliar, and blank slates, especially in terms of human exchanges. In such a situation, Japanese correspondents who came to Korea for the first time had a unique status as transmitters of information to both Korea and Japan and mediators in the relationship between the two countries. Therefore, analyzing the backgrounds of those who came to Korea and their reporting activities can help provide a new and broader understanding of Korea-Japan relations in the 1960s from a media and social perspective. With this in mind, this paper examined the main history and reporting activities of the first group of Japanese correspondents in Korea who entered the country with official visas issued by the Korean government for the first time after the April Revolution in 1960.
