국문장편소설에 나타난 귀녕의 양상과 그 의미

A Study on Aspects and Meanings of Gui-nyeong in Korean Full-lenth Novels

본 연구는 국문장편소설에 나타난 ‘귀녕’의 양상과 그 의미를 도출하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 국문장편소설에서 귀녕은 다양한 양상으로 나타나지만 본 연구에서는 시댁에서 발생한 위기를 피하거나 시댁에서 입은 피해를 치유하기 위한 귀녕과 친정에 문제가 있음에도 불구하고 귀녕을 떠나 오히려 갈등을 증폭시키는 귀녕을 중심으로 논의를 진행하였다. 이 두 양상의 귀녕이 서사적 기능이 상대적으로 잘 드러나기 때문이다. 전자의 경우 친정은 여성에게 일시적 안식처로 묘사되지만, 결국 다시 시댁으로 돌아가는 과정을 통해 현실적 규범을 수용하게 된다. 반면 후자의 경우, 친정 방문이 위기 상황을 초래하며 더 이상 친정을 찾을 명분이 주어지지 않고 시댁에서의 삶에 정착해야 하는 현실을 강조한다. 이를 통해 결국 친정은 현실적이면서 이상적인 요소를 동시에 지니는 복합적이며 모순된 공간인 ‘헤테로토피아’로서 기능함을 확인하였다. 귀녕을 둘러싼 갈등의 서사화는 헤테로토피아인 친정 방문을 통해 일시적이나마 심리적 위안을 얻지만 결국 친정이 일렁이는 공간이자 불안한 곳이라는 인식을 통해 시댁이라는 현실에 적응할 수밖에 없는 여성의 삶을 드러낸다. 즉, 귀녕은 친정을 이상적 공간으로 여기고 친정을 지향하지만 현실의 규범에 종속될 수밖에 없는 여성의 삶을 상징적으로 드러내는 것이라 할 수 있다. 이는 단순히 당대 여성의 경험에 그치지 않으며, 혼인으로 인해 친정으로부터 분리되는 현대 여성들에게도 공감을 일으킨다. 따라서, 국문장편소설의 귀녕 서사가 시대를 초월한 보편 서사임을 확인할 수 있다.

This study aims to identify the aspects and meanings of Gui-nyeong as represented in Korean long novels. Although Gui-nyeong, or a married woman's visit to her natal home, appears in various forms, this research focuses on two specific patterns where Gui-nyeong intensifies conflict. The first pattern involves Gui-nyeong as a means to avoid crises or heal from the hardships faced in the marital home, portraying the natal home as a temporary refuge, but ultimately reinforcing the woman’s return and acceptance of societal norms within her husband’s household. The second pattern depicts the visit as intensifying conflict, highlighting the dangers or unfeasibility of further visits to her natal home and underscoring the need to settle in her marital life. Through these patterns, the study finds that the natal home, while functioning as an idealized refuge and symbol of momentary freedom, ultimately serves as a temporary sanctuary—a “heterotopia” symbolizing an ideal yet unreachable respite. The narrative conflicts surrounding Gui-nyeong offer a glimpse into the temporary psychological solace women may find in their natal home, but they ultimately reveal the fleeting and unstable nature of this space, necessitating their adaptation to the reality of life in the husband’s household. Thus, while expressing an idealized space, Gui-nyeong symbolically reflects the women’s lives, which remain subject to societal norms. This experience resonates not only with the women of the time but also with contemporary women, who, after marriage, experience a similar sense of separation from their natal homes. Consequently, the Gui-nyeong narrative in Korean long novels emerges as a universal story that transcends time.
