의료 제도와 실천의 빈자리를 메우다 : 선우경식 선생의 전인치유

Filling the Gaps in Healthcare System and Practice : The Holistic Care of Kyung Shik Sunwoo

이 글은 선우경식(鮮宇景植, 1945-2008)의 삶을 한국 현대 의료사의 맥락에서 되짚는다. 지금까지 선우경식에 대한 다큐멘터리와 전기 등이 여럿 발표되었다. 그러나 아쉽게도 그를 다룬 학술 연구, 특히나 역사적 맥락 속에서 조망한 연구는 부재하다. 이는 부분적으로 한국 현대 의료사 연구 대다수가 제도권 의료에 집중한 결과이다. 제도권 의료와 대형병원에 초점을 맞춘 연구 지형 속에서, 주로 제도의 바깥에 놓인 이들을 진료했던 선우경식의 삶은 제대로 조명되지 못했다. 한국 현대 의료의 흐름 속에서 선우경식은 어떻게 제도 바깥에 관심을 두게 되었으며, 어떠한 이유에서 다른 이들과 구별되는 치유를 실천하게 되었는가. 그리고 이러한 그의 선택에는 어떤 의의가 있는가. 이를 규명하기 위해 이 글은 선우경식에 대한 인물사적 탐구와 그가 위치한 한국 현대 의료에 대한 사회사적 탐구를 교차한다. 그리고 이를 바탕으로 전인치유를 실천하는 한 가지 방법을 모색한다.

This article revisits the life of Kyung Shik Sunwoo (1945-2008) within the context of contemporary Korean medical history. Numerous documentaries and biographies have been produced about Sunwoo, yet scholarly research on his life, particularly studies set within a historical framework, remain lacking. This gap partially reflects the predominant focus of contemporary Korean medical history research on institutionalized medicine. Within a research landscape centered on institutionalized healthcare and large hospitals, Sunwoo’s life—devoted to treating those largely outside the formal healthcare system—has not received due recognition. This article examines how Sunwoo, within the broader currents of contemporary Korean healthcare, came to direct his focus outside institutional boundaries and why he pursued a distinctive approach to healing that set him apart from his peers. By investigating Sunwoo’s life through biographical study, and intersecting it with a social history of contemporay Korean medicine, this article seeks to elucidate the significance of his choices. On this foundation, it further explores an approach to implementing holistic care as demonstrated through his practice.
