영성 실천가로서의 선우경식 : 샤를르 드 푸코의 영성을 중심으로

Kyung Shik Sunwoo as a Practitioner of Spirituality : Focusing on the Spirituality of Charles de Foucauld

1987년 설립된 요셉의원은 그리스도의 사랑 안에서 “가난하고 의지할 데 없는 환자를 돌보며 그들이 자립해서 정상적인 사회생활을 할 수 있도록 도와주는 것”을 목표로 했다. 요셉의원은 그리스도의 사랑 안에서 이 목표를 지켜가고 있다. 개원 때부터 지금까지 요셉의원이 ‘가난한 자’들을 위한 의료혜택 제공을 지속할 수 있었던 이유는 영성 실천가로서의 선우경식의 삶과 무관하지 않다. 그리스도의 정신과 삶의 총체적인 모습을 영성이라 할 때, 선우경식은 그리스도의 영성 중에서도 샤를르 드 푸코(Charles de Foucauld, 1858~1916)가 좇았던 영성을 따르고 있었다. 본 연구는 선우경식의 삶을 이해하기 위한 한 방법으로서 그가 푸코 성인의 영성을 추구했다는 점에 주목한다. 구체적으로 본 연구는 선우경식의 개인적 기록물, 관련 인물 인터뷰, 요셉의원 발간 자료 등을 바탕으로 그가 샤를르 드 푸코 영성을 접하게 된 계기와 그 영성의 실천가로서의 모습을 되짚어 보고자 한다.

St. Joseph Clinic, established in 1987, set its goal as caring for the poor and destitute in the love of Christ and helping them achieve self-reliance to lead a normal social life. The clinic continues to uphold this mission in the love of Christ. Its sustained commitment to providing medical care for 'the poor' since its inception is closely tied to the life of Sunwoo Kyung Shik as a Practitioner of Spirituality. If spirituality is understood as the comprehensive spirit and way of life of Christ, Sunwoo Kyung Shik particularly followed the spirituality embraced by Charles de Foucauld (1858-1916). This study highlights Sunwoo Kyung Shik's pursuit of Foucauldian spirituality as a way to understand his life. Specifically, it explores how he encountered the spirituality of Charles de Foucauld and examines his embodiment of that spirituality, drawing upon his personal records, interviews with related individuals, and publications by St. Joseph Clinic.
