문화인류학의 관점에서 바라본 SF 장르의 몇 가지 논점에 관하여 : 문화적 유사성, 문화유물론, 유토피아를 중심으로

Some remarks on SF from a cultural anthropology perspective : focusing on cultural similarity, cultural materialism, and utopia

본 논문은 인류학 이론의 발생에 따른 시대적 학문적 혼란의 과정과 결과를 SF 장르의 특징적 지표로 삼아 분석한다. 문화적 유사성과 문화 유물론 그리고 실증주의는 이에 가장 대표적인 지표다. 초기 SF 문학 장르는 거의 모든 미지의 장소나 고립된 섬들을 그럴듯한 소재로 삼아왔다. 이러한 경향은 실증주의 이데올로기가 존재하지 않았던 상상적 공간에서 발생했다. 하지만 실증주의의 부산물, 즉 문화 유물론과 자본주의 시스템은 인간적인 상상력에 급진적인 인식론적 단절을 가져온바, 인간의 유비적 상상의 장소는 곧 건조한 격자식 공간으로 돌변하게 된다. 여기에 인류학 전개과정에서 탄생한 실증주의 이데올로기는 자본주의적 관행에 따라 정확히 구분되고 수량화할 수 있는 경직된 시간표, 즉 시간이 공간이 되는 이미지를 완성한다. 다시 말해 모어의 유토피아와 그것이 있어야 할 해안에는 자본적 시간의 무한한 바다가 자리하게 된 것이다. 이러한 상황에서 SF 장르는 우리의 역사적 시대와 그 안에 함축되어있는 인식적 이데올로기와 소외적 이데올로기를 병합하여 대안 현실을 제시함으로써 매우 경험적인 미래학적 지표를 제공한다. 이때 등장하는 새로움은 때로는 직접적으로, 때로는 매우 복잡한 방식으로 우리의 역사적 균열, 인식론적 단절, 최종적으로는 인간관계에서의 질적 불연속성, 그 균열의 지점을 틈타 나타난다. SF 장르의 이러한 특징은 항상 우리의 현실을 정조준한다.

This paper analyzes the process and outcome of the scholarly disruption of the anthropological theories of the epoch as an indicator of the characterization of the SF genre. Cultural similarity, cultural materialism, and positivism are the most appropriate theories for this purpose. This attempt is significant in that this article criticizes the limited and fragmented treatment of SF which has not escaped the literary critical approach as well as re-emphasizes the socio-cultural value of the genre. Early SF genres have used almost all unknown places or isolated islands as plausible sites. This tendency occurred in an imaginative space where positivist ideology did not exist. In fact, the byproducts of positivism, cultural materialism and the capitalist system, have brought about a radical epistemological break with the human imagination, so that the places of the human figurative imagination have become dry, grid-like spaces. The positivist ideology born out of the development of anthropology completes the image of time becoming space, a rigid timetable that can be precisely delimited and quantified according to capitalist practices. In other words, Moore's utopia, and its coast, becomes the infinite ocean of capitalist time. Thus, SF makes our historical era and the ideology of the epoch implicit within it into highly empirical futuristic indicators of an alternative reality. The Novum is created through our historical ruptures, epistemological disconnections, and finally qualitative discontinuities in human relationships, sometimes directly, sometimes very complicatedly. This characteristic of the SF genre is always aimed at our reality.
