시민 자격의 규정에 대한 문화사회학적 접근의 방법론적 의의

Methodological Implications of the Cultural Sociological Approach to Defining Civic Qualifications

시민교육의 우선 과제 중 하나는 해당 사회에서 살아가기에 적합한 시민의 자격을 규정하는 원리(존재 방식)를 밝히는 작업일 것이다. 그 기초적인 작업으로, 본 연구는 민주주의 사회에서 시민의 자격이 어떻게 규정되는지를 규명하기 위해 문화사회학적 접근의 가능성을 타진한다. 이를 위해 먼저 방법론적 토대로서 문화사회학적 접근을 살펴보고, 다음으로 문화체계의 내적 원리를 규명하였으며, 마지막으로 문화코드 분석의 의의에 대해 고찰하였다. 연구를 통해 밝힌 바는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문화사회학적 입장에서 ‘성’과‘속’의 이항적 분류체계는 자의적 성격을 가진다. 둘째, 의미체계로서 문화는 인간의 행위와 사회구조 사이의 매개물로, 시민의 자격은 그 과정에서 조정되고 합의된 문화적 구성물이다. 셋째,‘민주’와‘반민주’라는 문화코드의 이원성과 상호 규정성이 시민 자격에 관한 기준을 제시하고 평가하는 역할을 한다. 이를 통해 시회구조의 구성요소(담론구조)를 문화코드로 해석하는 가운데 시민사회의 이념형이 마련되고, 이는 시민의 자격으로 규정될 수 있음을 확인할 수 있다.

One of the priorities of civic education should be to identify the principle (existent method) that defines what qualifies a citizen to live in a society. As a foundational work, this study aims to explore the possibility of using a cultural sociological approach to investigate how civic qualifications are defined in democratic societies. To address this issue, the study first examined the cultural sociological approach as a methodological foundation, then revealed the inner principle of cultural systems, and finally discussed the significance of cultural code analysis. Here are the results of the study. First, the binary categorization of ‘the sacred’ and ‘the profane’ is arbitrary in cultural sociological approach. Second, culture as a system of meaning is the mediator between human behavior and social structure, and qualification of citizens is a cultural construct that has been adjusted and agreed upon in this process. Third, the duality and mutual regulation of cultural codes, which are divided into ‘democratic’ and ‘anti-democratic’ codes serve as criteria and assessments for civic qualification. Through this study, it was found that the process of interpreting the components of the social structure (discourse structure) into cultural codes establishes the ideological type of civil society, which can be defined as civic qualifications.
