This study analyzed how patriarchy is represented in the Arabic translation of Han Kang’s The Vegetarian and Cho Nam-joo’s Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982. Patriarchy has appeared in different forms depending on the era and region. In Korea, patriarchy has weakened compared to the late Joseon Dynasty, but it still retains its basic structure, while in the Arab world, patriarchy is strongly appeared through the influence of Qur’an, Hadith and Fatwa, interpreted from the perspective of male scholars. This study analyzed texts translated into Arabic based on the theory of explicitation presented by Klaudy et al. It classified the types of translation into ‘optional explicitation’, ‘pragmatic explicitation’ and ‘non-explicitaion’, and examined the ways of explicitation and its effects. The results of the study confirmed that patriarchy which appeared in the original text, tended to be reduced in the translation, and the main reason was analyzed as the translator's intervention or mistranslation. This study revealed cases of proper translation and mistranslation through the analysis of the translated texts, and presented examples of words or sentences that need to be retranslated.
