일제강점기 송광사 불교청년회 설립과 활동

Establishment and activities of the Songgwangsa Buddhist Youth Association during the Japanese colonial period

3.1운동 이후 일제는 무단통치에서 문화통치로 전환하였다. 한국 사회에는 식민지 체제를 극복하고 자주적 역량을 높이려는 운동이 일어났다. 불교 청년들도 이런 사회적 흐름에 동참하여 1920년 6월 20일 조선불교청년회를 설립하였다. 이어 전국의 불교 청년들이 지회를 설립하며 동참하였다. 송광사 불교청년회는 1920년 8월경에 설립되었다. 참여 회원이 100여 명에 이르는 규모였으나 전해지는 자료가 없어 전모를 파악하기 힘들다. 그 점을 보완하기 위해 송광사 출신으로 경성과 일본에서 불교청년회 활동을 한 인물들을 주목하였다. 타지에서 불교청년회 활동에 참여하였다면 송광사에 있을 때 불교청년회 회원이었을 가능성이 높기 때문이다. 송광사 출신으로 1920년대 중앙의 조선불교청년회 활동에 참여한 인물이 많았다. 1929년 1월 실행한 조선불교선교양종대회의 사전 발기회와 당일 행사 진행에 송광사 출신들의 참여도가 높았다. 일본에 유학한 사람들은 재일본조선불교청년회의 평의원과 부서 간사를 맡아 조직을 이끌었다. 1921년 하기방학 때 조직된 순회강연단 일원으로 국내를 순회하며 계몽운동을 전개하였다. 그들은 학교를 졸업한 뒤 송광사로 돌아와 교육활동을 하였고 벌교불교청년회가 설립될 때 많은 도움을 주었다. 1931년 이후 조선불교청년회는 조선불교청년총동맹으로 전환되었다. 송광사 불교청년회 출신들은 경성동맹이 출범하자 적극적으로 참여하였다. 송광사 불교청년회와 벌교불교청년회가 합쳐 벌교동맹이 되자 초기 동맹의 집행부를 맡아 활동 방향을 정립하였다. 그리고 일본에서 동경동맹이 출범하자 임원이 되어 적극적으로 동맹을 이끌었다.

Japan imposed cultural rule after the March 1st Movement in 1919. A cultural movement arose in Korean society to overcome the colonial system. In June 1920, the Joseon Buddhist Youth Association was established. Buddhist Youth Association branches were established throughout the country. In August 1920, the Songgwangsa Buddhist Youth Association was established. During the Japanese colonial period, Songgwangsa Temple sent many students to study in Gyeongseong and Japan. Those from Songgwangsa Temple who were studying in Seoul participated in the Joseon Buddhist Youth Association. Those who studied abroad in Japan participated in the Joseon Buddhist Youth Association in Japan. After graduating from school, they returned to Songgwangsa Temple and engaged in educational activities. They participated in the establishment of the Beolgyo Buddhist Youth Association. In March 1931, the Korean Buddhist Youth Union was established. Members of the Songgwangsa Buddhist Youth Association were active in the Gyeongseong Buddhist Youth Union, the Beolgyo Buddhist Youth Union, and the Tokyo Buddhist Youth Union in Japan.
