This paper argues that the complex and interdependent relationship between George Eliot and George Henry Lewes had a considerable impact on Eliot's literary achievements and personal identity. Although Lewes was instrumental in launching Eliot's career, their partnership was mutually beneficial rather than altruistic. This study examines the evolution of George Eliot's authorial identity, analyzing the dynamic between her reliance on Lewes and her pursuit of autonomy. By presenting their relationship as one of collaboration and control, this study challenges the idealized view of their partnership. Moreover, on the premise that the themes of interdependence and conflict in Eliot's work reflect her experiences with Lewes, the study also examines how these dynamics influenced her depictions of community life and human nature in her novels. In conclusion, this study proposes that a re-examination of the bond between Eliot and Lewes offers deeper insights into her literary methodology and the realistic, complex communities depicted in her works. It also demonstrates how her personal experiences informed her artistic vision.
