The purpose of this study is to examine the patterns of semantic extension in noun-to-verb conversions in English, with a focus on cognitive mechanisms such as metonymy, metaphor, generalization, and specification. By considering various cognitive pathways, it explores both the explicit meanings of parent nouns and the conceptual associations they evoke, which give rise to verbs with metaphorical meanings that extend beyond the nouns’ literal senses. This research seeks to clarify the motivations for semantic extension within and across grammatical categories, providing a solid foundation for understanding the semantic shifts involved in noun-to-verb conversions.
