영미어문학 제155호.jpg

This study explores the principles for developing a capstone course in English literature and examines its educational effectiveness through a case study of a redesigned course. In South Korea, capstone courses, initially introduced to promote university-industry collaboration for employment, revealed a notable absence of effective educational models for disciplines considered traditionally academic. This study, based on the previous research, identifies four essential requirements of capstone courses: comprehensive application of disciplinary knowledge, connectedness to hands-on experience, learner-driven project, and competency-oriented course design. This study provides practical principles to redesign the major course, and evaluates its educational effectiveness through in-depth interviews and the pre- and post-surveys (n=25). The statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test demonstrated significant improvements in creative thinking competency, practical interdisciplinary competency, and project management skills. The insufficient understanding of the team project process could reduce the learning outcomes and lead to learners’ dissatisfaction, indicating the need for more detailed explanation. This study is significant in that it highlights the educational value of capstone design, provides course development principles, and empirically demonsttrates that capstone design can serve as an effective model for English literature education.
