영미어문학 제155호.jpg

This paper investigates the vocabulary of the English Curriculum Standards used in Chinese Senior High School, issued by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE) in 2017, after a four-year revision. It has been evaluated as an optimized curriculum to meet the recent China’s educational environment, including a various vocabulary list. To determine if this curriculum is suitable for English education in Chinese high schools in terms of the high-frequency words in the English corpus data, this study used the BNC and COCA word family lists in the WORDSMITH program. The results show that, despite its satisfactory output for China’s current situations, the vocabulary in the curriculum includes more Chinese cultural topics and is limited to the high-frequency words of BNC/COCA. We argue that this research will contribute not only to Chinese English education but also to English education in many non-English-speaking countries by helping to build the most frequently used vocabulary for their English textbooks.
