박형룡의 변증학에 나타난 개연성 고찰

Review on the Probability in Hyung-Nong Park’s Apologetics

박형룡은 미국 프린스턴 신학교 메이첸(J. Gresham Machen)과 그린(William B. Greene, Jr.) 밑에서 변증학을 전공했고 남침례교신학교에서는 멀린스(Edgar Y. Mullins)와 카버(William O. Carver) 밑에서 변증학 전공으로 박사학위를 마쳤다. 두학교가 교리에서는 서로 다른 노선을 걸었지만 박형룡은 자신의 전공인 변증학을큰 어려움과 심각한 혼란 없이 잘 수학했다. 그 이유는 그의 주요 관심사는 실제적으로 기독교 정통 교리를 위협하는 자유주의, 근대주의, 과학주의와 어떻게 효과적으로 맞서 싸우면서 기독교 진리를 지킬 수 있느냐에 있었기 때문이다. 이 목적은 두 학교가 지향했던 목적이기도 했기 때문이다. 이러한 목적을 위해서라면 보수주의 신학이면 충분했다. 따라서 이성을 강조한 아퀴나스적 전통적(traditional) 변증학, 버틀러(Joseph Butler)의 개연적 변증학, 그리고 자연신학을 중심으로 한 페일리(William Paley) 변증학을 자연스럽게 답습했다. 이들에게 공통적으로 나타나는 것은 개연성(probability)이었음에 따라 박형룡의 변증학에도 자연스럽게 개연성이 나타난다. 박형룡에게 개연성은 교리적 개념이 아니라 실제적, 방법론적 개념이라 하겠다. 이 개연성은 특별계시인 성경의 충분성과 명료성, 그리고 일반계시의 명료성과 반한 개념이기는 하지만 박형룡 변증학에서는 불신자를 상대로 한 효과적이고 실제적 변증학의 방법 중 하나로 나타난다. 그러나 교리를 다루는 조직신학에 있어서 박형룡은 하나님의 계시의 정확성, 충분성, 명료성을 궁극적 준거(ultimate reference)로 삼아 발전시켰다.

Hyung-Nong Park majored in apologetics under J. Gresham Machen and William B. Greene, Jr. at Princeton Theological Seminary and completed his doctorate in apologetics under Edgar Y. Mullins and William O. Carver at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Although the two schools took different paths in dogmatics, Hyung-Nong Park studied well without much difficulty or a serious confusion. This is because his main concern was how to protect Christian truth while effectively fighting against liberalism, modernism, and scientism that threatened orthodox Christian doctrine. Conservative theology was sufficient for that purpose. Two schools generally had a certain conservative stance against modernism and scientism. Therefore, he didn’t naturally have a difficulty in adopting Aquinas' traditional apologetics that emphasized reason, Joseph Butler's probabilistic apologetics, and William Paley's apologetics centered on natural theology. What they all had in common was probability, so, naturally it appears in Hyung-Nong Park's apologetics, as well. For him, probability is not a doctrinal but a practical concept. Although this probability is a concept that runs counter to the sufficiency and clarity of the Bible, which is a special revelation, and the clarity of general revelation, in Hyung-Nong Park's apologetics it appears as one of the methods of effective and practical apologetics to win over non-believers.
