This article analyzes the debate between Richard Baxter (1615-1691) and George Fox (1624-1691) concerning the relationship between the Holy Spirit and the Bible. This controversy reveals a significant theological confrontation between Protestant orthodoxy and Quakerism in the seventeenth century. The study examines the main points of contention between the two parties through Fox’s The Great Mystery and investigates the foundations of their respective theological positions. The differences between these two theologians stem not merely from divergent doctrinal interpretations but from fundamentally different approaches to understanding revealed truth. While Baxter emphasized the objective authority and sufficiency of the Bible through an epistemological approach, Fox stressed the direct revelation and present work of the Holy Spirit through an experiential approach. These methodological differences manifested in irreconcilable positions on specific issues such as the presence of perfection, infallible inspiration, and the authority and sufficiency of the Bible. Through this analysis, this study highlights the fundamental theological differences between Baxter and Fox and their underlying foundations, rather than the continuity between them as suggested by previous studies.
