Is Theistic Evolution Permissible within Herman Bavinck's Theology?

본 연구는 네덜란드 개혁주의 신학자 헤르만 바빙크(Herman Bavinck)의 창조론을 중심으로 유신진화론(Theistic evolution)의 허용 가능성을 검토한다. 바빙크는삼위일체 하나님이 목적과 계획에 따라 세상과 인간을 창조하셨다는 창조론을 기독교 신앙의 핵심으로 보았다. 그는 다윈주의적 진화론에 대해, 그것이 기계적이고무목적적인 세계관을 제시하며 만물의 기원을 과학적으로 충분히 설명하지 못한다고 평가하였다. 다만, 바빙크는 아리스토텔레스적인 목적론적이고 유기적인 진화 개념은 창조와 상호 배타적이지 않다고 인정하며, 변화의 기초와 질서는 창조에 있다고 보았다. 바빙크의 신학적 관점에서 유신진화론이 수용 가능하려면 성경의 역사적 창조사건과 조화를 이루어야 한다. 그러나 유신진화론은 여전히 진화론으로서 과학적으로 문제가 있을 뿐만 아니라, 하나님의 초자연적 개입을 제한하거나 모든 생명체의 기원을 순전히 자연적 과정으로 설명할 때, 바빙크가 강조하는 창세기의 역사적 해석 및 구별된 종의 창조와 충돌하게 된다. 따라서 유신진화론은 바빙크의 신학적 틀에서 여전히 허용되기 어려우며, 하나님의 말씀으로서 성경의 역사적 가르침과 양립하는 유기적 발전 개념만이 그의 신학에서 받아들여질 수 있을 것이다.

This study examines the permissibility of theistic evolution within the creation theology of the Dutch Reformed theologian Herman Bavinck. Bavinck regarded the doctrine of creation, which affirms that the triune God created the world and humanity with purpose and intention, as central to Christian faith. He criticized Darwinism for presenting a mechanistic and purposeless worldview and for being scientifically insufficient in explaining the origin of all things. However, Bavinck acknowledged that an Aristotelian teleological and organic concept of evolution is not mutually exclusive with creation, viewing the foundation and order of change as grounded in creation. From Bavinck’s theological perspective, theistic evolution could only be permissible only if it harmonizes with the historical creation account in Scripture. Nevertheless, theistic evolution remains problematic as it still relies on evolutionary theory, which, in Bavinck’s view, is scientifically flawed. Additionally, by limiting divine supernatural intervention or explaining the origins of all life purely through natural processes, theistic evolution conflicts with Bavinck's emphasis on the historical interpretation of Genesis and the distinct creation of species. Therefore, theistic evolution remains difficult to accept within Bavinck's theological framework, and only a concept of organic development consistent with the historical teaching of Scripture as the word of God would be acceptable within his theology.
