A Study on Korean-Arabic Translation Strategies for Arabic and Korean Proverbs Quoted in Korean Speeches at International Conferences

This study focuses on Korean speeches delivered at international conferences, a representative text type in diplomatic language, by analyzing speeches posted over the past decade using the keyword 'proverb'. From this analysis, 71 speeches from international conferences were selected, and 58 foreign proverbs were classified into five themes. The analysis found that proverbs from the respective countries were quoted to respect their cultural backgrounds and foster familiarity with the audience. The most frequently cited themes were 'cooperation and communication' and 'friendship'. Arab proverbs, particularly those related to 'friendship' and 'hospitality,' were the most common, with 'الرفيق قبل الطريق' being the most frequently quoted. Korean proverbs, especially '구슬이 서 말이라도 꿰어야 보배' were primarily used to emphasize the importance of implementation. This study suggests using proverbs familiar to the target audience when translating Arabic proverbs and recommends literal translation, substitution, or free translation when translating Korean proverbs into Arabic.
