다인(茶人) 이순신 장군 고찰 - 명나라 장수들의 차 선물 목록을 중심으로

A Study on General Yi Sun-sin as a Tea Enthusiast : Focusing on the List of Gifts from Ming Dynasty Generals

본 연구는 이순신(1545-1598) 장군의 음다(飮茶) 문화를 중심으로 그가 단순한 군사적 영웅을 넘어 다인(茶人)으로서의 면모를 조명하는 데 목적이 있다. 이순신 장군의 가문은 고려 말과 조선 초부터 명나라와의 외교를 통해 음다 문화를 받아들였고, 이 전통은 그에게도 영향을 미쳤다. 『난중일기』와 『이충무공전서』등의 기록을 분석하여, 명나라 장수들이 이순신 장군에게 차와 다구를 선물한 배경을 탐구하였다. 이를 통해 이순신 장군이 차문화를 단순한 음료 소비로만 사용한 것이 아니라, 사대부 간의 교류, 도덕적 수양, 외교적 의사소통의도구로 활용했음을 밝혔다. 이 연구는 조선 중기 사대부 문화 속에서 이순신 장군의 정신적 유산을 재조명하며, 그의 문화적 역할과 가치를 이해하는 기초를 제공한다.

This study focuses on the tea culture of Admiral Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598) with the aim of exploring his identity as a military hero and as a tea practitioner. Yi Sun-sin’s family adopted tea culture through active diplomacy with Ming China during the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, significantly influencing Admiral Yi Sun-sin's life. By analyzing records from Nanjung Ilgi (War Diary) and The Complete Works of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, this study investigates the background and significance of the tea and tea utensils gifted to Yi Sun-sin by Ming generals. The study reveals that Yi Sun-sin utilized tea culture as an essential medium for scholarly exchanges, moral cultivation, and diplomatic communication. The tea and utensils presented by Ming generals highlight Yi Sun-sin’s practice of tea culture and underscore his role as a key figure in the Confucian scholar-official culture of the mid-Joseon period. This study reexamines the interaction between Yi Sun-sin’s legacy and the tea culture of Joseon literati and provides a foundation for understanding his cultural significance and role. Furthermore, it explores how tea culture facilitated moral, academic, and diplomatic exchanges that shaped the personal cultivation and cultural legacy of Yi Sun-sin’s.
