Key Perspectives on the Body and the Sociology of the Body

우리는 일반적으로 우리의 몸을 사회 공간으로 생각하지 않고, 물리적 몸에만 초점을 맞춘다. 그러나 우리의 몸은 사회와 연결되어 있다. 몸이란 무엇인가? 언제 인생이 시작되는가? 어떤 방식으로 임신을 하고 출산을 하는가? 몸은 자아정체성과 죽음과 어떤 관계가 있는가? 대중문화가 성별과 연령에 따라 몸에 부여하는 이미지는 왜 다른가? 권력과 자본은 우리의 몸에 어떻게 개입하는가? 오늘날 첨단 기술을 우리의 몸을 어떻게 변화시키는가? 몸의 사회학은 이와 같은 수많은 질문들과 만난다. 이는 몸의 사회학이 성별, 인종, 고령화, 장애, 사회 심리 및 건강, 죽음을 포함한 사회학 연구의 여러 분야를 이끌어낼 수 있음을 의미한다. 본고는 몸의 사회학의 이론화에 주목하면서 몸의 사회학의 확장 가능성, 특히 ‘장애(죽음)와 몸의 사회학’의 가능성 탐색에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 몸에 대한 사회학적 주요 관점과 이론가들을 검토하고, 지금까지 몸의 사회학에서 주로 다루고 있는 핵심 이슈들과 주요 사회이론가들에 대한 논의하며, 마지막으로 몸의 사회학의 여백으로 남아있는 장애, 노화, 죽음과 몸의 사회학이 정초되어야 할 필요성을 제시한다.

We generally do not think of our bodies as social spaces, but focus only on the physical body. However, our bodies are connected to society. What is the body? When does life begin? In what ways do we conceive and give birth? How does the body relate to self-identity and death? Why do popular cultures give different images of the body depending on gender and age? How do power and capital intervene in our bodies? How do cutting-edge technologies change our bodies today? The sociology of the body encounters numerous questions like these. This means that the sociology of the body can draw on many areas of sociological research, including gender, race, aging, disability, social psychology and health, and death. This paper focuses on theorizing the sociology of the body and explores the possibility of expanding the sociology of the body, especially the possibility of ‘disability (death) and the sociology of the body.’ To this end, we review the main sociological perspectives and theorists on the body, discuss the key issues and major social theorists that have been mainly dealt with in the sociology of the body, and finally suggest the need to establish the sociology of disability, aging, death, and the body, which have remained as the margins of the sociology of the body.
