Three Perspectives on the Beauty of Mathematics: Aesthetic Objects, Sensibility, and Practices

본 연구의 목적은 수학의 심미성을 대상에 초점을 맞춰 바라보는 전통적인 관점으로부터 보다 경험적이고 실천적인 측면에 초점을 맞춘 현대적인 관점으로의 변화에 관해 살펴보는 것이다. 전통적인 관점에서 수학의 심미성은 단순성, 간결성, 명료함과 같은 수학 대상이 지닌 심미적인 특성들로 설명되어 왔지만, 최근의 연구들에서는 그러한 심미적인 판단에서 작용하는 수학적 감수성의 작동 방식에 주목하기도 하며, 수학 탐구 과정에서 심미성이 수행하는 역할에 대한 실천적인 측면에서의 분석도 시도되어 왔다. 본 연구는 수학의 심미성에 관한 수학교육 분야의 연구 흐름을 살펴보고 관련 국내 연구의 학문적 기반을 제공한다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the shift in perspectives on the aesthetics of mathematics—from the traditional view, which focuses on the intrinsic qualities of mathematical objects, to more contemporary approaches that emphasize experiential and practical dimensions. Traditionally, the aesthetics of mathematics has been explained through properties such as simplicity, conciseness, and clarity inherent in mathematical objects. However, recent studies have turned their attention to the functioning of mathematical sensibility in aesthetic judgment and have explored the roles that aesthetic practices play in the process of mathematical inquiry. This study provides an overview of research trends in mathematics education concerning mathematical aesthetics and aims to lay a scholarly foundation for further studies in this area, particularly within the context of South Korea.
