다산( 茶山 )의 『대학( 大學 )』 - 레게(J. Legge)와 게일(J. Gale)의 영역본과 비교하여

Tasan(茶山)’s Deahak (大學) : compared with J. Legge’s and J. Gale’s work

본 연구는 『대학(大學)』의 해석과 실천적 윤리로서 다산 정약용의 사상을 조명하고, 그의 『대학공의』를 제임스 레게(James Legge)와 제임스 게일(James Gale)의 번역서와 비교 분석하였다. 다산은 『대학』을 단순히 군주학적 관점에서 해석하지 않고, ‘혈구지도(絜矩之道)’와 ‘서(恕)’를 중심으로 인간 관계와 윤리의 실천적 측면을 강조하였다. 그는 인간 보편의 도리를 공감과 배려의 원리로 재구성하며, 이를 구체적인 생활 윤리로 제시하였다. 이에 반해 레게와 게일의 번역은 주자학적 전통에 기반을 두어 『대학』의 내용이 제한적으로 해석되었다. 본 연구는 다산의 『대학』 해석이 현대적 윤리와 리더십의 가치와도 긴밀히 연결될 수 있음을 논증하였다. 특히, 공감(empathy)의 중요성을 강조하며, 다산 사상이 오늘날의 개인화된 사회에서 공동체 회복과 지속 가능한 관계 형성에 기여할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하였다.

This study examines the philosophy of Tasan (Jeong Yakyong, 丁若鏞) by analyzing his interpretation of the Great Learning (大學) in comparison with translations by James Legge and James Gale. Unlike traditional neo-Confucian interpretations that focused on governance and monarchy, Dasan emphasized the practical ethical aspects of the Great Learning, centering on the principles of seo (恕, empathy) and hyeolgujido (絜矩之道). His reinterpretation highlights universal human ethics, emphasizing empathy and mutual consideration as actionable guidelines for daily life. In contrast, Legge and Gale’s translations remained limited to the orthodox framework of Neo-Confucianism. This study argues that Tasan’s interpretation bridges classical philosophy and modern values, offering a meaningful framework for contemporary ethics and leadership. By emphasizing the significance of empathy, Tasan’s approach provides insights into fostering sustainable relationships and community restoration in today’s individualized societies.
