Today, English Language Teaching (ELT) in South Korea is facing serious challenges and crises. There have been a number of regressive phenomena observed since the introduction in 2018 of the jeoldaepyeongga (absolute grading) system to the English section of the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test (KCSAT). The main goal of this paper is to investigate the fundamental nature of the crises facing the ELT in South Korea through analyses of the two recent national English testing policy initiatives undertaken by the government and explore possible ways for the ELT community to overcome the crises. To that end, this paper critically reviews some of the important features and consequences of the jeoldaepyeongga system and tough lessons learned from the failure of the Korean National English Ability Test (NEAT). It further proposes the strengthening of the policy capacity of the Korean ELT community as a way to cope with these deepening challenges and crises.
