마키아벨리의 역사서술과 그 아이러니

Machiavelli’s Historical Writing and Its Irony

일반적으로 마키아벨리는 르네상스기 피렌체를 대표하는 정치가나 정치사상가, 좀 더 정확히 말하자면 피렌체 공화사상의 대표 주자로 조명되고 있다. 이에 따라 르네상스기 공화사상의 정수로 간주되는 대표작 『리비우스 논고』 와 달리, 도시의 기원부터 1492년에 이르는 피렌체의 역사를 통사의 관점에서 쓴 그의 『피렌체사』는 상대적으로 많은 주목을 받지 못해왔다. 거기에 담긴 비관적인 논조와 일견 반-공화주의적인 뉘앙스 때문이었다. 하지만 오늘날의 통념과 달리, 마키아벨리는 휴머니스트 역사가로 자부했고, 역사가 고유의 시선으로 당대의 문제를 바라보려 했다. 본 연구는 바로 그 점에 주목해『리비우스 논고』에서 『피렌체사』를 거치면서 역사에 대한 마키아벨리의 생각이 변화하는 과정을 추적하면서, 정치사상가가 아닌 ‘역사가 마키아벨리’의특징을 살펴보려는 시론이다. 결론적으로 본 연구는 마키아벨리가 과거는 현재와 결코 같을 수 없는 낯선 세계이며 따라서 역사로부터 교훈을 얻을 수있다는 생각을 버리게 되었다고 주장한다. 이 점에서 그의 역사서술에는 역사의 보편성이나 교훈성과 관련된 여러 딜레마와 아이러니가 존재한다. 하지만 바로 그 점들이 마키아벨리가 역사가로서 한층 성숙했다는 점을 보여주는 징표이다.

Generally Machiavelli has been mainly seen as a active politician or political thinker representing Florence during the Renaissance, or more precisely, as a representative of Florentine republican thought. As a result, unlike the Discourse on Livy which has been interpreted as the quintessence of Renaissance republican thought, the Florentine History which he wrote from the diachronic perspective from the city’s origin to 1492 has not received much attention. It was because of its pessimistic tone and seemingly anti-republican nuances. Contrary to today's accepted belief, however, Machiavelli prided himself on being a humanist historian and tried to look at the problems of his time through the lens of history. In focusing on these, the present study is an essay which attempts at pursuing change in Machiavelli’s perception of history from the Discourse on Livy to the Florentine History and examining the characteristics of Machiavelli as a historian rather than a political thinker. In conclusion, this study argues that Machiavelli did not think that the past and the present could ever be the same, and that one could therefore learn something from history. In this respect, there are many dilemmas and ironies in his historical writings related to the universality or didactic nature of history. But it emphasizes that those are the signs of his maturity as a historian.
