
Association between Experience of Sadness & Despair and High-Caffeine Drink Consumption among High School Student

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between consumption of high-caffeine drink and experience of sadness and despair among high school students. Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis and used Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2022). The respondents of this study were 23,835 person. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS 25 ver. for chi-square and complex sample logistic regression analysis. Results: Consumption of high-caffeine drink has statistically significant differences in household income, cohabitation type, academic achievement, physical activity, experience of sadness & despair, smoking and drinking. In logistic regression analysis, high-caffeine drink consumption with ‘〈 1 time / day’, experience of sadness & despair (yes) was 1.18 times higher (p<.001) and In case of high-caffeine drink consumption with ‘≥1 time/day’, experience sadness & despair (yes) was 1.32 times higher (p<.001) compared to experience of sadness & despair (none). Conclusion: The results provide a basis information for the developing an intervention program to reduce experience of sadness & despair and high-caffeine drink consumption for high school students.
