This study examines international students’ perceptions of sheltered content instruction (SCI) compared to general major courses at a university. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to evaluate lecture comprehension, teaching methods, and assessment practices. The findings indicate that students in sheltered courses demonstrate higher comprehension due to instructors’ use of accessible language. Additionally, SCI contributed to a positive perception of course workload and reduced psychological barriers to interacting with the instructor and peers. Students also expressed satisfaction with assessment practices, such as clear exam guidelines and assignments closely related to lecture content. Furthermore, SCI alleviated anxiety by providing an environment free from competition with native students. However, the study suggests that SCI should be selectively applied to introductory courses, serving as scaffolding for international students’ academic and linguistic adaptation. The research highlights the importance of instructors’ language adjustments, clear alignment between lectures and assessments, and detailed guidance on evaluations.
