본 논문은 N. K. 제미신(N. K. Jemisin)의 <부서진 대지> 삼부작(The Broken Earth Triligy) 중 첫 번째 작품인 『다섯 번째 계절』(The Fifth Season)을 중심으로 감정과 차별의 이데올로기가 사회적 억압을 어떻게 구조화하고 강화하는지를 분석한다 작품은 오로진이라는 소외된 인물들이 겪는 차별과 감정적 억압을 서사적으로 형상화하며, 사회적 감정이 차별과 배제의 기제로 어떻게 작동하는지 탐색한다. 이를 분석하기 위해 본 논문은 사라 아메드의 『감정의 문화정치』(The Cultural Politics of Emotion)를 이론적 틀로 삼아 혐오와 두려움과 같은 감정이 단순히 개인적 반응이 아니라 사회적 배제와 불평등을 정당화하고 재생산하는 방식에 주목한다. 특히 작품 속에서 감정이 구조적 억압의 기제로 기능하는 과정과 이를 통해 사회적 경계가 형성되는 방식을 분석함으로써 감정이 억압적 체계를 유지하는 핵심 요소로 작동함을 논의한다. 또한 본 연구는 『다섯 번째 계절』이 억압의 구조 속에서 감정이 어떻게 순환하는지를 보여주는 동시에 차별의 이데올로기가 내면화되는 과정을 서사적으로 드러낸다는 점에 주목한다. 이를 통해 감정이 단순히 개인의 문제가 아니라 사회적 권력 관계를 구성하고 지속시키는 핵심 기제임을 밝히고, 작품이 이러한 구조를 비판적으로 재현하는 방식을 조명하고자 한다.
This paper examines how the intertwined ideologies of emotion and discrimination shape and sustain social oppression in The Fifth Season, the first book of N. K. Jemisin’s The Broken Earth Trilogy. The novel narratively constructs the experiences of marginalized individuals, the Orogenes, depicting their subjugation and emotional oppression while exploring how societal emotions function as mechanisms of discrimination and exclusion. To analyze this process, this study employs Sara Ahmed’s The Cultural Politics of Emotionas a theoretical framework, focusing on how emotions such as hatred and fear are not merely personal reactions but actively justify and perpetuate social exclusion and inequality. Specifically, this paper investigates how emotions operate as structural mechanisms of oppression within the novel, shaping social boundaries and reinforcing hegemonic power relations. Furthermore, it highlights how The Fifth Seasonnot only illustrates the circulation of emotions within oppressive systems but also reveals the internalization of discriminatory ideologies through its narrative. By doing so, this study demonstrates that emotions are not isolated individual experiences but essential forces that construct and maintain social hierarchies, ultimately providing a critical exploration of the politics of emotion and structural discrimination.
