The Shifting of Spatiotemporal Scales and the Sense of Mobility in the Anthropocene: Elizabeth Bishop’s Floating Species

본 논문은 미국 여성 시인 엘리자베스 비숍의 시에 나타난 시공간 규모의 인식과 전환, 그리고 이동성과 운동성의 감각을 최근 물질적 전회에 기초한 인류세 사상가들과 신유물론 페미니스트 캐런 바라드에 의해 제안된 새로운 공간과 규모 개념을 적용하여 탐색하고자 한다. 이들은 공간을 상호관계성의 산물로 이해하고 다양한 규모들 사이의 위상학적 연결성을 인식한다. 본고는 비숍의 ｢인간-나방｣과 ｢상상의 빙산｣, 그리고 ｢영국의 크루소｣에 묘사된 수평적 움직임과 수직적 움직임으로부터 인류가 인류세에 발견시켜야 하는 적응성과 회복탄력성, 또는 응답-능력을 감지한다. 비숍에게 수직적 움직임은 위계질서나 지배에 대한 욕망이 아니라 지표면에 묶이지 않은 채 자유롭게 공간을 창조하며 삶을 향유하는 새로운 방식을 발견하는 능동적 행위성과 연관된다. 이는 우리가 비인간들과 상호작용하면서 단순히 생존하기를 넘어 삶의 새 양식들을 재창조해 내는 좀 더 희망적인 인류세의 비전을 제시한다. 이 논문은 먼저 ｢인간-나방｣에서 고대의 시간에 대한 기억과 현대문명, 그리고 인류의 미래에 대한 전망이 연결되는 지점으로 체현된 인간 변종인 생명체를 통해 인류세적 시공간의 인식과 규모의 전환을 살펴본다. 그리고 ｢상상의 빙산｣과 ｢영국의 크루소｣ 속 다양한 종들의 운동성을 분석함으로써 인간과 비인간이 궁극적으로 지구라는 집에서 만들어진 하나의 종이므로 모두 인류세에 이동하는 무대 위의 떠다니는 종들로서 대안적 삶의 방식을 함께 창조하고 서로에게 응답하면서 더욱 큰 가능성들을 향해 나아가자고 제안한다.

This study explores the perception and shifting of spatiotemporal scales, as well as the sense of mobility and motion in Elizabeth Bishop’s poems, by applying new concepts of space and scale, which understand space as a product of interrelationships and recognize the topological connections between different scales, recently proposed by new material feminist Karen Barad and Anthropocene thinkers based on the material turn. From the horizontal and vertical movements depicted in Bishop’s “The Man-Moth,” “The Imaginary Iceberg,” and “Crusoe in England,” it senses the adaptability and resilience, or response-ability that human beings must develop in the Anthropocene. For Bishop, vertical movement is not about the desire for hierarchy or dominance but is associated with an active agency that creates space freely without being tied to the Earth’s surface and discovers new ways of enjoying life. This suggests a more hopeful vision of the Anthropocene, where we, interacting with nonhumans, recreate new modes of living beyond merely surviving. This article first examines the shifting of spatiotemporal scales in “The Man-Moth” through a human mutant that embodies the connection between deep time, modern civilization, and humanity’s future. Then, by analyzing the movements of various beings in “The Imaginary Iceberg” and “Crusoe in England,” it suggests that humans and nonhumans are one kind of species home-made within the house of the Earth, and as floating species on shifting stages they should rebuild together alternative ways of living and move toward greater possibilities in response to one another.
