『파리외방전교회지』에 나온 만주국 시기 가톨릭 교회 상황에 대한 연구

파리 외방 전교회는 1838년 만주대목구가 설정되면서 본격적으로 만주 선교지를 관할하기 시작하였으며 이 지역을 조선 선교를 위한 거점으로 삼으려 하였다. 100년이 지난 후 만주대목구는 여러 선교지로 분할되고 다른 선교회에 관할권을 이양하였다. 하지만 그들이 담당한 봉천대목구와 길림대목구에서 활동을 지속하였다. 파리 외방 전교회 선교사들은 만주국 시기 천주교 내부의 상황과 만주국 정부와의 관계에 대해 지속적으로 보고하며 『파리외방전교회지』에 기사를 제공하였다. 우선 만주 지역 가톨릭 교회의 전체 동향에 대해 보도하였다. 만주 지역의 교세 통계 보고, 대목구장의 활동 보고, 만주 선교지 분할 과정이 나와 있다. 당시 만주 선교지의 가장 큰 근심거리였던 비적 위협에 대한 보도도 올라왔다. 이어서 길림대목구와 봉천대목구 관할 가톨릭 교회의 활동상에 대한 기사가 나왔다. 대목구 내 본당 설립과 행사를 비롯하여 대목구 소속 성직자 근황, 수도회 활동이 나왔다. 그리고 만주로 이주한 조선인 신자 사목에 대한 기사도 나왔다. 가톨릭 교회 내부의 상황 뿐만 아니라 만주국 정부와의 관계 정리와 교섭 과정에 대한 보도도 있었다. 당시 만주국 정부는 다른 종교와 마찬가지로 가톨릭 교회에 대해서도 신앙의 자유 보장과 국가적 통제라는 이중적인 정책을 쓰고 있었다. 만주 선교지에서 100년 이상 활동했던 파리 외방 전교회는 이러한 상황을 주시할 수밖에 없었다. 『파리외방전교회지』에는 이러한 상황에서 가스페 주교가 교황청 포교성성으로부터 만주국 가톨릭 교회를 대표하는 지위를 부여받은 사실과 이후 만주국 정부와 교섭을 하고 만주국 주교회의를 개최한 것에 대한 보도가 나온다. 이를 통해 만주국 내 가톨릭 교회는 만주국 정부와 우호 관계를 유지하려 하였고 파리외방전교회 역시 그러한 정책에서 크게 벗어나지 않았을 뿐만 아니라 매우 적극적으로 협조하는 입장이었다는 점을 알 수 있다.

There was also a report about the bandit threat, which was the biggest concern at the time. Subsequently, articles about the activities of the Catholic Church under the jurisdiction of the Kirin and Moukden vicarages appeared. The establishment and events of the parish in the vicariate, the recent status of clergy belonging to the vicariate, and the activities of the religious order came out. There was also an article about pastoral care of Korean believers who emigrated to Manchuria. There were also reports on the situation within the Catholic Church as well as the process of negotiations and the arrangement of relations with the Manchukuo government. At the time, the government of Manchukuo, like other religions, was using a dual policy of guaranteeing freedom of religion and state control over the Catholic Church. la Société des Mission Etrangère de Paris, which had been active in the mission field in Manchuria for more than 100 years, had no choice but to keep an eye on this situation. Annales des Missions Étrangères de Paris reports on the fact that Bishop Gaspe was granted the position of representing the Catholic Church in Manchukuo by the Congregation for Propagation of the Holy See, and that he subsequently negotiated with the Manchukuo government and held the Manchukuo Bishops' Conference. Through this, it can be seen that the Catholic Church in Manchukuo tried to maintain friendly relations with the Manchukuo government, and la Société des Mission Etrangère de Paris not only did not deviate greatly from such a policy, but also actively cooperated.
