[논단] 토마스 아퀴나스와 천사 - 『신학대전』 제1부 제56-61문을 중심으로

오늘날 인간의 사고 속에 천사에 대한 관심은 그리 많지 않다. 요즘 흥미 유발을 위해 영화나 애니메이션 등에서 다뤄지기는 하지만 그것도 작품의 주제로서가 아니라 단지 하나의 소재일 뿐이다. 천사에 대한 연구 학문인 천사학(angelology)은 전통 신학 10가지 주제 중의 하나였다. 천사에 대한 첫 체계적인 저술 『천상위계론』(天上位階論, De coelesti hierarchia)은 후세의 고전적 천사학에 가장 큰 영향을 주었다. 가톨릭 교회 역사 속에서 천사와 연관된 문제들에 대하여 철학적이든 신학적이든 많은 학자들에 의하여 수많은 연구와 논쟁이 이어졌다. 그 가운데 토마스 아퀴나스의 천사에 대한 관심도 빼놓을 수 없다. 토마스는 천사에 관한 다양한 주제 중에 천사의 창조와 본성, 천사의 활동과 역할 등에 각별한 관심을 집중한다. 따라서 그의 천사론의 특징은 훗날 교도권의 천사에 대한 가르침과 결정에 커다란 영향을 준다. 천사에 관한 토마스의 이론적 탐구 방향은 크게 두 가지이다. 하나는 철학적 방향이고, 다른 하나는 신학적 방향이다. 하지만 그의 주된 천사에 관한 연구 방향은 철학적이라기보다는 근본적으로 신학적이다. 천사에 관한 이전의 교회의 학자들과 가르침을 간과하지 않았으며, 교부들의 신학적 가르침을 결코 등한시 하지 않았다. 토마스의 천사학은 두 가지 범주 안에서 전개된다. 다시 말해 토마스는 천사의 창조와 세상에 대한 하느님의 통치와 밀접하게 연관시켜서 천사에 대하여 연구한 것이다. 토마스는 합리적인 철학적 기초와 함께 신학적 확신을 토대로 하여 천사에 대한 사상의 완성과 체계를 형성한다. 그리고 그것이 바로 토마스의 천사의 연구에 대한 가장 커다란 업적이며 성과라고 할 수 있다.

Angels do not draw much attention in the minds of the people these days. They are sometimes used in movies and animations to arouse interest, but they appear merely a subject, not a main theme. Angelology, the study of angels, was one of the ten topics of traditional theology. The first systematic writing on angels, De coelesti hierarchia had a great influence on later classical angelology. Throughout the history of the Catholic Church, topics related to angels - whether philosophically or theologically - have been studied and debated by many scholars. One example is Thomas Aquinas’s interest in angels. Among other questions, Thomas paid particular attention to the creation and nature of angels, their activities and roles. As such, the characteristics of his angelology have had a profound impact on later magisterial teaching and decisions about angels. There are two main directions of Thomas’ theoretical inquiry into angels. One is philosophical and the other theological. However, his primary direction of angelic research is fundamentally theological rather than philosophical. He did not overlook the earlier scholars and teachings of the Church on angels, nor did he neglect the theological teachings of the Church Fathers. Thomas’ angelology develops in two categories. In other words, Thomas studied angels in close connection with their creation and God’s rule over the world. Thomas’ theological convictions, together with a rational philosophical foundation, form the basis for the completion and organization of his ideas about angels, and this is his greatest achievement and contribution to the study of angels.
