마르코 복음의 기적 이야기들 가운데 가장 긴 본문인 마르 5,21-43의 이야기는 회당장 야이로에 관한 일화 사이에 하혈하는 여인에 대한 일화가 삽입된 이른바 ‘샌드위치’ 구조를 보여준다. 두 일화에 상호적 관계를 설정하여 하나가 다른 하나를 해석하는 실마리가 되게 하는 이 구조적 기법은, 각 사건 속 주요 인물들이(야이로, 하혈하는 여인) 예수님에 대한 믿음을 통하여 구원을 얻는다는 주제적 일관성과도 깊이 연관된다. 본 논고는 이 핵심 주제를 보다 면밀히 검토하고자 설화적 비평을 적용한다. 이야기의 단일성과 구조 및 구성적 흐름을 파악하고 주요 인물들의 특성과 그들의 상관관계를 고찰하는 가운데, 이야기 속에서 강하게 부각되고 있는 두 설화적 모티브, 곧 구원을 청하는 이들이 지닌 ‘믿음’과 그 구원을 선사하시는 분께서 지니신 ‘권능’이 어떻게 조화를 이루며 ‘믿음으로 얻는 구원’이라는 대주제로 발전해 나가는지를 확인한다.

The longest passage in the Gospel of Mark that shows Jesus performing miracles is the frame narrative where the story of the hemorrhaging woman is inserted in the story of Jairus, a ruler of synagogue. This structural technique, which establishes a reciprocal relationship between the two anecdotes so that one becomes a clue to interpret the other, is deeply connected to the thematic consistency that the main character in each story (Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman) find salvation by faith in Jesus. This paper applies narrative criticism to examine this central theme more closely. By examining the unity, structure, and compositional flow of the narrative, as well as the characterization of the main characters and their interrelationships, it shows how the two narrative motifs that are strongly emphasized in the story - the ‘faith’ of those who ask for salvation and the ‘power’ of the one who offers it - are harmonized and developed into the larger theme of ‘salvation by faith.’
