Climate has influenced much of human history, and many scholars have studied the effects of climate on human history. Many scholars have also studied the effects of climate on Chinese history, and significant results have been published. Some of these scholars believe that the much cold climate during the Wei Jin Southern Northern Dynasties led to the migration of northern peoples southward. However, the term Wei Jin Southern Northern Dynasties covers a long period of about 370 years, which raises the question of whether four centuries of climate change can be interpreted in the same way. In this study, we examine the role of climate change in the growth of the Murong-Former Yan regime, and find that while the climate cooled during the rise of the Murong-Former Yan regime, it did not have a significant impact. This suggests that we need to further refine our study of the Wei Jin Southern Northern Dynasties period, both geographically and temporally.
