Pax, the Latin word for peace, refers to a long-term peace achieved and led by a hegemon with overwhelming national power on an international level. In world history, eras of peace with a period of rapid global economic growth have paradoxically arrived when a hegemonic power existed. Representative examples include Pax Mongolica of the Mongol Empire in the 13th and 14th centuries, Pax Britannica of the British Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries, and Pax Americana of the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries. Although the eras in which these hegemonic powers existed were different, they were able to overwhelm other countries of the same age and effectively project powerful influence over a wide area by occupying hegemony in different spaces such as land, sea, and air. In particular, in the process of hegemonic formation of the three countries, three determinant factors of hegemony emerged: ‘the width of the space where influence of a hegemon is projected’, ‘the time required to project the influence’, and ‘the influence projected in the space where there is an intention to secure its influence’. Therefore, this study examined the common characteristics that emerged in the process of hegemonic formation the Mongol Empire, the British Empire, and the United States, which are considered major hegemons in world history, based on three determinant factors of hegemony: space, time, and influence.
