Effectiveness of digital literacy education for the elderly: Development directions based on previous studies and discussions on AI literacy

The purpose of this study is to review previous research on digital literacy education for the elderly and propose progressive directions for its development, with a brief consideration of the necessity of AI literacy education. Using the Research Information Service (RISS), 40 dissertations and 28 academic papers were analyzed. The findings indicate that digital literacy education significantly enhances the quality of life for elderly individuals by improving life satisfaction, promoting successful aging, maintaining and improving cognitive functions, reducing depression, and strengthening physical health and social support. Digital literacy also empowers older adults to engage more independently in daily activities, mitigating risks of social and digital exclusion. As AI technologies become increasingly integral to daily life, fostering AI literacy among the elderly holds significant potential to enhance their adaptability and inclusion. While this study primarily focuses on digital literacy, it highlights the growing need for AI literacy as a complementary area for future research. Expanding digital and AI literacy education programs can equip the elderly with essential competencies, thereby bridging technological disparities and enhancing their quality of life and social participation in the digital era.
