페르시아어 ‘죽음’ 표현의 인지언어학적 분석

Cognitive linguistic analysis of the Persian expression for ‘DEATH’

본 논문은 페르시아어 신문 기사에 나타난 ‘죽음’을 묘사하는 완곡표현을 인지언어학적으로 분석한다. 인지언어학의 주요 기제인 개념적 은유와 개념적 환유를 통해 추상적인 ‘죽음’의 개념이 어떻게 언어 표현으로 구체화되는지 분석하였다. 분석의 대상은 부고를 제외한 153개의 페르시아어 온라인 기사로 사전적 정의 및 유의어를 통해 선별된 키워드로 헤드라인을 검색한 후, 기사 속 관련 표현을 발췌하여 코퍼스화 하는 방식을 택하였다. 언어 자료 분석 결과, [죽음은 여행], [죽음은 이별], [죽음은 잠], [죽음은 신과의 합류], 그리고 영혼이나 생명을 ‘귀중한 물건’으로 표현하는 개념적 은유의 방식으로 페르시아어 표현이 구체화되었다. 또한, ‘눈’이나 ‘얼굴’과 같은 신체 부위가 전체 인물을 대표하는 개념적 환유의 방식도 확인되었다. 이러한 은유의 방식은 이슬람을 바탕으로 한 이란 문화의 사후세계관과 죽음에 대한 수용적 태도를 반영하고 있다. 이는 한국어 표현과는 일부 차이가 있는 것으로, 여러 문화권에서 ‘죽음’에 대한 체험과 태도가 유사해 보이지만, 각 문화권마다 특징적인 문화적, 종교적 배경이 표현에 반영된 것으로 보인다.

This paper analyzes euphemisms describing ‘death’ in Persian newspaper articles from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Through conceptual metaphor and conceptual metonymy, which are the main mechanisms of cognitive linguistics, we analyze how the abstract concept of ‘death’ is concretized into linguistic expressions. The analysis targets 153 Persian online articles, excluding obituaries, and searches for headlines with keywords selected through dictionary definitions and synonyms, and extracts related expressions from the articles to create a corpus. As a result of the analysis of linguistic data, Persian expressions are concretized in the form of conceptual metaphors such as [DEATH is a journey], [DEATH is a separation], [DEATH is a sleep], [DEATH is a union with God], and expressing the soul or life as a ‘precious object’. In addition, conceptual metonymy was also confirmed, in which body parts such as ‘eyes’ or ‘face’ represent the entire person. This form of metaphor reflects the afterlife view and the accepting attitude toward death of Iranian culture based on Islam. This is somewhat different from the Korean expression, and although the experiences and attitudes toward ‘death’ seem similar in various cultures, it seems that the unique cultural and religious backgrounds of each culture are reflected in the expression.
