The Multilayered History and Imperial Legacy of Plovdiv : Formation of Urban Identity and Cultural Fusion

유럽에서 가장 오래된 지속 거주 도시 중 하나인 플로브디프는 제국의 영향력이 도시 정체성 형성에 미친 영향을 보여주는 주목할 만한 사례이다. 본 논문에서는 트라키아부터 로마, 비잔틴, 오스만 제국에 이르기까지 다양한 제국이 플로브디프의 도시 구조, 사회 조직, 문화 경관에 미친 다면적 영향을 고찰한다. 하여 이와 같은 역사적 변천이 현대 도시의 정체성과 문화유산 형성에 어떻게 기여했는지를 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 각 제국 시기는 도시 발전에 뚜렷한 흔적을 남겼음을 확인할 수 있었다. 트라키아 시대는 기본적인 정착 패턴과 문화적 기원을 확립했으며, 로마 제국은 정교한 도시계획과 기념비적 공공건축을 도입했다. 비잔틴 시대에는 도시의 종교적 중요성과 예술적 유산이 강화되었고, 오스만 제국 시기에는 다문화 통합과 사회적 공존이 촉진되었다. 연속적인 제국의 영향은 풍부한 역사적 층위와 문화적 다양성을 지닌 도시로서 플로브디프의 발전에 총체적으로 기여하였다. 이렇듯 플로브디프 사례연구를 통해 제국의 유산이 현대 도시 정체성과 발전에 미치는 영향을 파악할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 과거와 현재를 잇는 역사적 유산의 중요성을 강조하며, 역사도시에서 제국 계승이 도시 발전과 문화 보존에 미치는 장기적 영향을 이해하는 데 더 넓은 시사점을 제공하며 도시사, 문화유산 관리, 그리고 현대 도시 정체성 형성에 있어 제국 유산의 역할에 관한 학술적 담론에 기여하고자 한다.

Plovdiv, one of Europe's oldest continuously inhabited cities, presents a compelling case study of how successive imperial influences have shaped urban identity through multiple historical epochs. This paper examines the multifaceted impact of various empires—from the Thracians through the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods—on Plovdiv's urban structure, social organization, and cultural landscape. The research analyses how these historical transformations have contributed to the city's contemporary identity and cultural heritage. The study demonstrates how each imperial period left distinct marks on the city's development: the Thracian period established the foundational settlement patterns and cultural origins; the Roman Empire introduced sophisticated urban planning and monumental public architecture; the Byzantine era enhanced the city's religious significance and artistic heritage; and the Ottoman period fostered multicultural integration and social coexistence. These successive imperial influences have collectively contributed to Plovdiv's evolution into a city characterised by rich historical layering and cultural diversity. Through the case study of Plovdiv, this research provides insights into how imperial legacies continue to influence modern urban identity and development. The findings emphasise the significance of historical heritage in bridging past and present, while offering broader implications for understanding the long-term impact of imperial succession on urban development and cultural preservation in historical cities. This analysis contributes to the broader scholarly discourse on urban history, cultural heritage management, and the role of imperial legacies in shaping contemporary urban identities.
