예이츠는 「소금쟁이」에 큐비스트 요소를 반영, 시 표현 방법의 가능성을 확대한다. 「소금쟁이」를 분석해보면 피카소의 「아비뇽의 처녀들」이 표현하는 성과 죽음의 분위기가 느껴지고 또한 피카소가 모델을 이등분 삼등분으로 분해시킨 후 재구성하여 그린 「거울 앞의 소녀」의 모습도 떠오른다. 전자가 모더니즘을 사로잡은 주제 중의 하나라면 후자는 모던화를 겪으면서 발생한 단편화 현상과 연관이 있다. 「소금쟁이」는 지난날의 자신의 모습을 분해하여 삼등분하여 재구성하여 표현하고 있는데 이는 지난 날 민족주의자로서, 시인으로서, 또 정치가로서의 삶의 편린들이다. 또한 젊은 예이츠부터 노년의 예이츠까지 시인의 상상력을 사로잡은 성에 대한 탐닉과 죽음에 대한 고뇌가 배어 있다. 이러한 그의 기억들이 이 시안에서 선, 면, 원, 그리고 도형을 닮은 큐비스트의 언어로 꿈틀대고 있는 것이다.
W. B. Yeats tried to expand the possibility of poetic expressions by incorporating Cubist elements in his poem “Long-legged Fly.” An examination of this poem reveals that it reflects Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon which deals with the theme of sex and death, and Girl before a Mirror by the same painter, a painterly analysis of the girl’s psychic and physical state. The former has to do with one of the main concerns of modernists; the latter the fragmentation in a mechanized modern world. “Long-legged Fly” is a dissection of the poet’s life into three parts and rearranges them, conveying Yeats’s memories about his career as nationalist, poet, and politician.
