The main purpose of this study is to analyze the role of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) in enhancing tourist experiences in dark tourism sites in South Korea. The research utilized secondary data obtained from academic journals, conference proceedings, historical documents, travel blogs, journals, newspapers and websites in addition to interviews with Korean citizens. The results revealed the role of AR and VR in enhancing tourist experiences in dark tourism sites, benefits of AR and VR technologies, and the challenges faced in implementing AR and VR technologies in dark tourism sites in Korea. The study provides necessary strategies that can be implemented in overcoming these challenges and recommends areas for further research. The findings of the study may benefit various sectors of the Korean tourism industry including site managers, policymakers, stakeholders, technology developers, historians, local communities, and visitor by emphasizing the potential of AR and VR in improving tourism experiences in dark tourism sites.
