생태환경의 시선으로 다시 읽는 개발의 역사 - 한국근현대 생태환경사 연구의 확대와 ‘개발’의 재인식

Rereading the History of Development through the Lens of Environment: Rethinking the history of “development” in the context of environmental history in Korea

이 글은 당도한 기후위기라는 ‘현실’과 번영에 대한 한국사회의 오랜 ‘관성’ 사이에서, 최근의 한국생태환경사 연구가 근대 이후 한국의 ‘개발’을 그린 다양한 시선을 조망했다. 이를 통해 번영과 수탈, 성장과 분배라는 이항대립을 넘어, 인간과 비인간, 식민지와 탈식민, 번영과 재난이 뒤얽힌 ‘개발’의 역사를 탐색했다. 이를 위해 역사학·사회학·인류학·과학기술학 등 여러 분과학문의 관련 연구를 종합하고, 개발과 각 정치체제 간의 적대적 공범관계, 개발과 인간-인간 너머의 관계, 개발 이후 삶의 역사를 요약했다. 맺음말에서는 향후의 연구 과제를 제시했다.

Between the 'reality' of the climate crisis and the long-standing 'inertia' of Korean society toward prosperity, this article examines the different ways in which recent studies in Korean ecological and environmental history have depicted 'development' in post- modern Korea. This book explores the history of 'development' that goes beyond the binary opposition of prosperity and dispossession, growth and distribution, and intertwines humans and non-humans, colonization and decolonization, prosperity and disaster. To do so, it encompasses relevant research from various disciplines such as history, sociology, anthropology, science and technology, and summarizes the antagonistic complicity between development and political systems, the relationship between development and non-humans, and the history of post-development life. The concluding section suggests future research challenges: exploring the cultural foundations of development, expanding attention to the world beyond the human, and strengthening interdisciplinary and transnational collaborations.
